FURNITURE DELIVERY: FIVE STEPS TO SUCCESS

Ashley Furniture Clearance Sales 70% OFF: Up to 50%  70% OFF Select  Items for Living room + Home furniture. Free Shipping Redeem this Ashley Furniture coupon and get Up to 50% OFF Select Home Decor + Free Shipping On Many Items

You've researched your options, shopped until you dropped and now it’s time to have your new furniture delivered! So what needs to be done ahead of your furniture delivery? Read on for five steps to success.

1. Measure, Measure, Measure

Couple moving house and measuringHopefully you measured your space before ordering your furniture! However, you’ll need to take a few more measurements before the delivery truck arrives. Assess the width and ceiling height of all doorways and hallways your furniture will need to traverse. If applicable, also measure the width of stairways including handrails. If using an elevator to deliver furniture, make sure to measure it, too. Next, measure the width, depth and height of your new furniture pieces—these measurements should be less than the widths and heights of the doorways leading to the room where your furniture will reside. Be prepared to remove any doors if necessary, and it’s not a bad idea to also have a backup plan in place. For instance, if you have large French doors in the back of your home, it might make more sense to bring a sectional through that threshold as opposed to the front door.

2. Dispose of old furniture

ThinkstockPhotos-465946799Make sure your old furniture has been removed from the room. Otherwise, the delivery team won’t have anywhere to set up your new furniture and it might be left lingering in a hall. What fun is that? There are several organizations that will gladly take your donated furniture and some might even pick it up at no charge. A quick internet search will help you locate the organizations that serve your area

3.  Clear the Clutter

ThinkstockPhotos-80033002In addition to removing your old furniture, you should clear out all pass-through areas. This includes not only accent tables and storage pieces in the halls, but also artwork and pictures hung on the walls. If possible, you should also secure low-hanging light fixtures. You might be surprised how easily your decorative items can hinder a successful delivery.

4. Secure your petsdog in a wire crate

Your door will need to be left open as the furniture is brought in, so be sure to secure your pets in a different area of the home. This is crucial—not only because Fluffy or Fido could escape, but also because they could pose a tripping hazard for the delivery team. And while it’s common sense, the same applies for small children!

5. Protect floors/secure area rugs

ThinkstockPhotos-507630598Speaking of tripping hazards, you should remove or secure area rugs and door mats. And, while our team takes every precaution to protect your floors from dirty footprints, it can’t hurt to shield your floors with drop cloths or paperboard that has been secured with low-adhesive tape.

It’s a Jungle in Here

At some point, every parent has likened their kid’s bedroom to either a pig sty or a zoo (or maybe even both). Why not just embrace the situation and let their room become a full on jungle? No, we’re not suggesting that you give up and let them live in a room of mess and destruction! Instead, transform their space into an animal kingdom and charge them with the task of being the room’s zookeeper.

Make Toys Part of the Decor
The age-old problem of where and how to store stuffed animals is easily solved by incorporating the creatures into the room’s decor. Low-hung shelves offer easy access and allow kids to put their furry friends on display.

Look Beyond Children’s Furniture
A mainstay in home decor, animal print accessories and furnishings abound. We think you and your little one will especially love our KeyTown upholstered storage bench. Two deep drawers provide tons of storage space for Legos, Barbie dolls, games, books and much more. The firm cushion provides a comfy seat for reading and the cheetah-print upholstery is purring with style. Easily add a more youthful touch by swapping out the traditional drawer knobs with whimsical hardware.

Incorporate Favorite Creatures Wherever You Can
Bookcases have a tendency to become one of the most cluttered areas of a kid’s room. If your child can’t reach the top shelves, it only makes sense that the lower half of the bookcase is going to become a mess. For this reason, you’re much better off with two shorter bookcases. You can also call on the critters to help your kiddo maintain tidy shelves. Our adorable whale wall shelf, for instance, will help keep their favorite stories stacked up straight.
To further emphasize the animal theme, why not add a few related books to their little library? Some of our favorites include:
  • The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson (Ages 3-7)
  • Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes by James Dean and Eric Litwin (Ages 4-8)
  • The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith (Ages 5-8)
  • The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen and Dan Hanna (Ages 3-6)
  • Go, Dog Go! by P.D. Eastman (Ages 3-7)

Do you have any books to add to the list? Let us know in the comments.

STUCK AT HOME? STEP UP WEEKEND COMFORT

No weekend plans means one thing: spending lots of time at home in your living room-–great after a hectic work week–not so great if your furniture has had better days. Say goodbye to Aunt Edna’s old couch and make way for transforming your living room into an island of comfort. Discover five essentials that will make lazy weekends all the more relaxing.

RECLINE AND INCLUDE MOTION FOR COMFORT

Whether it’s one, two or several, recliners in the living room give you and your guests the chance to elevate feet and reduce back stress. Go to ashleyfurniturehomestore.com to look for features like wide seats, power options and soft, supple leather. Don’t stop with recliners. Add a reclining sofa and loveseat. Be sure to check out power options, so it will be easier for guests to adjust their seats. Just think: now there will be no arguments over who gets the recliner.

ADD A TABLE OR TWO

Marimon Coffee Table
Tired of balancing your plate while finding a place to set a drink? Welcome a coffee table and end tables to your comfort zone. Look for tables with casters, so you can easily move them. A round coffee table is ideal because it gives you more space. Imagine having a spot to set a large pizza for game-time snacking. Include end tables too. They’re perfect for lamps and offer more spots to set snacks and drinks. Discover end tables that include options like charging stations―super if you want to be able to charge your phone, iPad or laptop from the comfort of your living room. Create a welcoming atmosphere by adding tabletop accents, like vases, candles and sculptures.

ILLUMINATE WITH LAMPS

Shaunette Table Lamp

A weekend at home means you’ll have lots of time to become a bookworm. For this escape, it’s important to have a lamp that gives off the right amount of light. When looking for lamps, consider those with light colored fabric shades because they let more light through. You’ll also want lamps that provide the right intensity for easy reading. Since the amount of wattage required for reading varies according to a person’s age and eyesight, it’s helpful to have lamp with a 3-way switch.

TREAT YOUR FEET

Handspun Rug

Full comfort includes what’s under your feet. An area rug, like a jute rug, not only anchors the sitting area and defines its space, it helps warm the room by creating a comfort zone between a bare floor and your feet. These beautifully handwoven rugs not only add color and texture to the floor, they can create a calming effect with elegance.

PUFF UP PILLOWS

Leonard Pillow Cover
Accent your recliners and sofa with pillows The more the merrier. Look for extra soft pillow covers then fill with feather inserts. They work great for armrests, headrests, back support and more. Don’t stop with pillows, include throws and poufs for ultimate comfort.
With the scene set, you’ll be looking forward to lazy weekends of true relaxation.

There’s a reason the kitchen is called the heart of the home: It’s where you and your family gather to cook, to eat, to socialize, and, sometimes, just to catch up over a quick snack or a cup of coffee. In many homes, the kitchen has evolved into an all-purpose room, including a dining table, computer desk, entertainment area, even a fireplace.
Today’s kitchens are practical, welcoming, and fun. They feature sophisticated colors and innovative components. They also look more like the rest of the house, complete with furniture-like cabinets, wood flooring, and artwork. The perfect recipe for a beautiful kitchen calls for giving a lot of thought to both the components and the activities that take place in the room, from cooking and cleanup to snacking and socializing. Above all, the perfect kitchen is both comfortable and a pleasure to work in. Here are ten simple elements to consider for your well-planned kitchen.

Style
The design of your kitchen may be classic or contemporary, casual or formal, high-tech or homey—whatever reflects your style preference. Because the cabinets, countertops, and appliances comprise the major components in a kitchen space, you’ll want to decide what your overall style will be before choosing them. If you’re worried about combining looks with practicality, many designs strive to blend traditional looks with modern conveniences. A generously proportioned kitchen with classic materials and up-to-date amenities proves to be both stylish and practical.

Perhaps Workstead’s most liberating move was to flip the position of the refrigerator from the galley wall to an adjacent space outside the kitchen proper. In one fell swoop, this strategy dramatically expanded cabinet space and added a working countertop
Layout
Kitchen layout studies in the 1950s introduced the term work triangle, whose three legs connect the refrigerator, sink, and range or cooktop. An efficient work triangle reduces the steps a cook must take during meal preparation and, whenever possible, is notinterrupted by traffic flow. Today, the work triangle is being challenged by other options; nevertheless, it is still a valuable starting pointfor good kitchen design. If your space is small, you might want to consider a one wall kitchen or a galley kitchen. Gaining in popularity are minimalist kitchens, in which obvious kitchen elements such as the refrigerator and upper cabinets are downplayed or tucked out of sight and the kitchen area has the same sensibility as the living space it has merged with. Deluxe kitchens are expansive spaces that often have two or more work zones.
Modern kitchen renovation with dark concrete counter and blue cabinets
Cabinets
Your first decision is whether to keep your existing cabinets, perhaps refinishing or refacing them, or to replace them. If you replace them, you will need to decide if you want “fitted” or “unfitted”cabinets. A fitted kitchen, the almost universal choice since the mid-20th century, consists of banks of matching upper and lower cabinets with appliances incorporated into them. “Unfitted” kitchens generally have a mix of styles and colors. The cabinets are more furniture-like. Upper cabinets may float singly on the wall or may sit on the countertop like a hutch; shelves may take the place of cabinets. Other decisions include cabinet construction and style and whether you want stock, semi-custom, or custom cabinetry. You’ll also want to decide on the materials and finishes. You can always mix things up, choosing different materials and complementary ones, to bring personal style to your kitchen.

LIGHTEN UP: 4 TIPS FOR HANGING CHANDELIERS & PENDANT LIGHTS

With daylight savings time only days away (don’t forget to “spring forward” your clocks on March 13), we’re thrilled at the prospect of letting there be more light. If your plans include lightening up around the house by installing or replacing a chandelier or pendant, we have some tips to help you achieve beautiful results.

#1 Make an Entrance in the Foyer.

With the right foyer light, you can create everything from a warm welcome to a grand entrance. A quick tip for sizing your entry light: Add up the length and width (in feet) of your space to calculate the diameter of a light (in inches). For example, an entryway that’s 5 feet by 10 feet can accommodate a light 15 inches in diameter. Keep in mind, the bottom of the light fixture should be no less than 7 feet off the floor.
The open-and-airy feel of our Fadri pendant light is a great look for the indoor-outdoor transitional nature of an entryway.

#2 Cater to Your Dining Room Table.

How high? For a standard 8-foot ceiling, chandeliers should hang about 30 inches to 32 inches above the surface of your dining room table. For each additional foot of ceiling height, you can raise the chandelier about 3 inches.
The scale of this translucent drum shade light is nicely proportional to the table. Not too big. Not too small. Just right.
How wide? Though it’s not set in stone, here’s the general rule: For round/square tables, the diameter of the chandelier should be about 12 inches narrower than the diameter of the table. Rectangular tables tend to offer more leeway.
How much light? Brighter lighting might work for your work space. For the dining room, softer lighting will serve you well. You can set the scene for romance by putting your light fixture on a dimmer switch. Pendants with diffusers are another option.

#3 Be Complementary. Add Continuity.

Matching the shape of your chandelier or pendant light to your dining room table infuses a sense of continuity. If you have a rectangular table, you might consider a long, linear fixture or two flanked lights. Have a round table? Circular drum shades add symmetry. Whatever light fixture you choose, you’ll want it to complement your decor and the architectural style of your home. Modern merges with modern. Traditional ties in with traditional.
A wide-scale light fixture such as our faux pillar chandelier can truly extend the appeal of a rectangular table or kitchen island.

Not one but two Famke pendant lamps flanking the Wesling rectangular table make such a pretty pair.D381-13-124(4)

Equipped with a softening diffuser, the striking Damali pendant light is so at home in its modern surroundings. We love how the table and chair’s cross-bar element is echoed in the drum design.

#4 Awaken to Bedroom Trends.

Chandeliers and pendant lights are making their way into the bedroom more and more. We love the trend. Incorporating romance and elegance, chandeliers work best in rooms with at least 9-foot ceilings. You’re welcome to hang a chandelier in the middle of the ceiling or off center, say over a writing table. For even more drama, hang it over your bed (at a comfortable, unobstructive height over the center or head of the bed). After all, your bed is the centerpiece of the room. Give it the wow factor it’s due.
In the bedroom, consider swapping out a space-hogging table lamp for a hanging pendant light. As our wire mesh Jovani pendant light shows…it’s a cool, clever way to lighten things up.A chandelier dripping with drama—such as our fresh twist on the French chandelier—can transform your bedroom from a place you sleep to an elegant retreat.

If you’re after a warm and cozy glow, try turning off the lights and lighting some candles. We’re slightly obsessed with the DIY candles Erin recently made on Francoise et Moi. Not only do they provide soft, natural light, but they also smell like pure Christmas. What could be more cozy than that?

If you’re like most people, you spend about a third of your days asleep (less, perhaps, if you’re a new parent or a college student cramming for finals). And the most important piece of the slumber puzzle is your pillow. Choose the wrong one, and you’ll trade 40 winks for fitful tossing and turning. Keep these tips in mind as you shop for the right headrest.

Choose a filling. Your preference is as individual as you are, but there are three major types of fillings. If you like to feel cradled, you might choose a malleable goose down or feather filling. These materials retain warmth and help to keep you toasty on cold nights. On good-quality versions, look for an indicator called fill power, which refers to how much filling the pillow has (the more filling, the plumper and longer lasting the pillow will be).

One advantage to down: It lacks the sharp ends of feathers, which can poke through the pillowcase and prickle your skin. Allergy sufferers who want the comfort of down or feathers can buy special hypoallergenic pillow covers to alleviate reactions.

Springy memory foam molds itself to your head, returning to its original shape after you arise. Because it conforms to your movements in the night, it can be a good choice for restless sleepers. It also works well for those with neck and spinal problems, as it distributes weight evenly. The downside? It tends to be expensive.

Polyester filling, less expensive than down and memory foam, tends to provide good support and hold its shape reasonably well. However, it is also the least durable of these materials.

There are more specialized and natural options too; you also buy pillows with specialized fillings such as buckwheat hulls, which shift along with your position, and natural and organic latex, which are breathable and resist mold, mildew and mites.

Use the help of top home decorators to select matching nightstands and new lamp shades for your own bedroom design

Decide on the size. To choose the right size pillow, you’ll need to consider three factors: how big your bed is, how many pillows you need and how you will use them. Pillow sizes correspond roughly to mattresses (standard, queen, king).

However, that doesn’t mean you have to play by the rules — an oversize pillow can feel enveloping and cozy on a smaller bed. If you like to prop yourself against a pile of pillows for reading, buy smaller-size ones that you can layer. Even on a king-size bed, a standard pillow may be what you want to sleep on.

Use the help of top home decorators to select matching bedside tables and a new lamp shade for your own bedroom design

Select the right softness. Whether you choose down, synthetic or another filling, the way it’s packed in makes a difference in how the pillow feels. A filling that’s stuffed tightly into the cover makes for a firmer pillow; conversely, less filling means a looser, softer feel. Many mattress showrooms allow you to try them out before you buy.

Consider your sleep position. The way you sleep will affect the loft, or height, of your pillow; different positions require different types of support. Back and stomach sleepers may want to choose a flatter pillow that helps keep the neck aligned properly. If you sleep on your side, however, a loftier pillow, which fills the gap between head and neck, is generally a better choice.

Take special needs into account. You’ll find plenty of specialty pillows on the market tailored to specific situations. For example, people with allergies might think about a pillow with a cover and filling that are specifically formulated to keep away dust and mites. If you snore, consider a pillow shaped to position your head and neck in a way that will prevent your airway from becoming compressed.

6 Tips for Choosing Bedding

Ah, bedding. We ask so much from this one element. We want it to be comfortable, easy-to-clean, and beautiful—after all, it will set the tone for the entire room. Check Ashley Furniture Clearance Sales 70% OFF for fun holiday!
There’s no doubt that we ask a lot from our bedding. But how do you choose the best bedding for you, given the seemingly endless options available? Here are six tips to selecting the perfect set.
Think Multiples
You will typically want at least two complete sheet sets for your bed—that way, should a cleaning disaster arise, you won’t be left sheet-less for the night. Keep it practical by choosing heavier, warmer sheets for the winter months and lighter, cooler sheets for summer.
Practically speaking, having at least one set of sheets in neutral is a good bet. Should you choose to switch up your duvet, neutral sheets will still look coordinated.
Duvet vs. QuiltLet it be known that bedding terminology is fluid, at best: different people have different terms for various items. Tomato, to-mah-to.
The object in question is the main blanket that covers your bed and keeps you warm at night. There are two main options for this: a linen that is used to envelope a filling, like a down comforter (think a pillowcase to a pillow), and one where the filling is sewn into the cover, making it a single blanket. For simplicity sake, we’ll call the former a “duvet” and the latter a “quilt”.
Duvets offer the benefit of being easier to clean without taking up the entire washing machine, like a full quilt is apt to do—though anyone who has tried to wrangle a comforter back into a duvet cover will know that it’s still not the easiest thing to do. Perhaps the greatest benefit of a duvet cover versus a quilt is that you can fill the duvet with whatever type of comforter the season calls for.
Thread What?Thread count is a common attribute used to describe linens. It represents the number of yarns per square inch of fabric. Traditionally, a higher thread count meant higher quality fabric. Most fabrics today are made with machines, so while a threat count of 350 in times of yore might have signified a high quality product, today’s sheets can have a thread count of 1,200.
In short, thread count today doesn’t mean as much as it once did. Marketers love to use it, but don’t let it be the only factor in your decision. Instead, give the sheets a little scratch: if the material pills, it’s probably not great quality.
Single Ply – Not Just for Toilet Paper!Single ply means that the weaving process consists of single yarns being woven over and under another, whereas plied yarns consist of yarns that are first twisted together, then woven with other plied yarns.
Single ply fabrics are typically lighter, softer and more durable—three factors that most people look for in linens. If that sounds like your perfect sheet, then stick to single ply.
Bedding as DécorAvoid the sterile, hospital bed look: pump up the aesthetics with throws and decorative pillows. These are some of the easiest accessories to play around with, since they are easy to switch in and out. Make them central to whatever décor theme you decide to work with in your room.
Keep it CleanExperts say you should wash your linens once per week, rotating sets if you have multiples. Let’s be honest: washing linens is a pain, and it takes up a lot of room in the washing machine. Don’t feel bad if you stray from the weekly rule, but try to wash them at least every two to three weeks!
Washing details will always depend on the fabric, so study the labels carefully. Generally speaking, warm water with mild detergent is best.
Easy MaintenanceBedding is awkward to iron, but it looks so much better when it’s free of wrinkles. Take a shortcut by machine drying it on a low temperature (or on “wrinkle release”, if your dryer offers that setting). Once the linens are dry, remove them immediately. Smooth them out and fold them to keep wrinkles at bay. Certain fabrics are also less prone to wrinkling. Try cotton flannel or jersey fabrics.
The top tip? Choose bedding that you love. Aim for comfort–duvet covers, throws and pillows can be used to pretty up the room. And don’t forget–if you share your bed with a significant other, make sure that they love it, too!
