Tips for Planning the Perfect Kitchen

Your kitchen space is the heart of your home, and that’s why it’s so important to plan out its design layout thoroughly. While it’s a good idea to design your kitchen according to your tastes and styles, it’s also extremely important to design your kitchen space around your needs and wants. But which is more important; your kitchen needs or your design desires?

Form or Function?
Everyone wants to have the perfectly designed kitchen space. Whether you’re going for a traditional kitchen design or you’re into a more modern look, choosing form over function can be a big mistake. Be sure to design your kitchen layout around your appliances to achieve maximum working efficiency.
Often referred to as the kitchen triangle, the space between the three most used kitchen features should be limited in distance from one another to increase the working kitchen’s efficiency. If you make sure that your sink, refrigerator and stove top are within close proximity of one another, you’ll be sure to make your kitchen space as useful as possible.

Countertop Landing Spaces
If you like to cook, you’ll want a good amount of countertop space to make cooking easier to do. One of the best places for additional countertop space is between the range and the sink. This area is commonly used for cooking pots and pans and should be as large as possible for a kitchen that’s used for cooking more than eating. For kitchens that serve as an eating place as well as a cooking place, multi-level surfaces ensure that kids and adults alike can easily access eating spaces without getting in the way of hot pots and pans placed on lower countertop levels. Caesarstone offers some of the best countertop landing spaces that are perfect for a wide variety of kitchen applications ranging from cooking to eating.

Shelving
Open shelves are often neglected in many modern kitchen designs. But the fact of the matter is that these spaces are crucial to making cooking and cleaning easier in the kitchen. Spice racks around stove tops and ovens provide chefs with easy access to essential cooking materials without slowing down cooking production times. Corners that provide storage space in cabinetry can be a waste of space. Fill these areas with open shelving to help maximize kitchen storage to its fullest potential.

Utensil Storage
More often than not, utensils like knives, spatulas and spoons that are used for cooking go into a drawer. This not only eliminates precious storage space, but it makes finding the right utensil for the job difficult at best. Hanging utensils on a magnetic rack can help free up crucial drawer space for more important items in the kitchen.

Message Center
Modern kitchen spaces aren’t just for cooking any more. They are a gathering center for the family and are often used as a place for relaying important messages. A simple message center with a chalkboard makes any kitchen space feel more like home. Best of all, message centers work great as a small office space when a phone and countertop space is set aside in these essential kitchen areas.

Expert Advice: 15 Essential Tips for Designing the Kitchen

With more than 50 kitchen projects under his belt, Jerome Buttrick of Buttrick Wong Architects (a member of the Remodelista Architect and Designer Directory) is a veteran of kitchen design. One of those designs was for Julie's kitchen, which serves as an ongoing testament to his thoughtfulness on how to create a meaningful space in what has become the hub of the modern home. We asked him to share his insights.

Remodelista: What's your approach to kitchen design?
Jerome Buttrick: Kitchens are really the soul of the house and are for more than just cooking but also for congregating, so they need to be put in the context of the home's public spaces or the adjacent spaces. In a lot of older houses, the kitchen tends to be isolated and often small. Today, people want a kitchen that incorporates both a workspace and a casual space for dining or even working.
Above: A window was added to this kitchen in a Pre-War House in San Francisco to let in light; a shade acts as a scrim between the owners and their neighbors.
Above: This San Francisco kitchen island features stained oak cabinets beneath the counter. On the far wall, in lieu of upper cabinets, is a stainless steel hood with a shelf. "An elevated shelf behind a counter or a stove is a nice thing to keep things off the counter and keep it looking clean."
Above: A soapstone island surrounded by a wood counter in this updated kitchen of a Pre-War House in San Francisco. Buttrick notes, "It's nice to have a chandelier over an island as it adds intimacy and scale to a room, although it should not compete with the dining room lighting."
RM: What are people looking for in a kitchen?
JB: They want an efficient work space, they always want storage, and, even if they don't immediately realize it, they want some basic parameters to separate the wine-drinking guests from the action in the kitchen.
RM: How do you create a kitchen that incorporates both a workspace and a casual hanging-out space?
BW: An island is the standard way to do this or a breakfast table nearby, but it depends on the particularities of the layout. It can also be done by creating a little breakfast area in the kitchen with built-in casual seating for a living room-like feel. The two spaces need to be fused together so don't look as if they are imposed on one other.
RM: The kitchen triangle?
JB: I think less in terms of the traditional triangle layout and more in terms of creating a work area that goes from fridge to sink to stove, with several paces between. This is an ergonomic question, and a kitchen is not a success unless you have solved this. The fridge and the sink need to be linked, but the cooking section can be a little more isolated or independent.
Above: Organically pleasing materials (marble countertops and oak cabinets) give this East Bay kitchen a timeless quality. Buttrick concealed the hood in the cabinetry above the stove.
RM: Favorite countertop material?
JBThere's no perfect countertop; I like organic materials and I am a lover of Carrara marble, the whiter the better. I am not troubled by patina, but you have to seal Carrara with Porous Plus by Miracle. I also like concrete surfaces by Concreteworks in Oakland, CA.
RM: Upper cabinets: yes or no?
JB: Upper cabinets are practical; you can make the cabinet fronts solid and uniform or create a sense of openness with glass fronts. Glass-fronted cabinets create depth and make the kitchen feel more spacious. If you do with this option, you need to think about the glasses and plates inside—there needs to be visual coordination. You can put in obscure (frosted or ridged) glass, but that only goes so far—the Disney mugs will still be visible. I often recommend sets of Crate & Barrel or Heath Ceramics dinnerware for a simple look.
Above: White cabinets with glass sides that sit on top of the counter.
Above: In this Indoor Outdoor Home, Buttrick created a custom stainless drain board behind the sink, which frees up the area on either side. The marble recessed backsplash is built into the raised walnut counter that sits six inches taller than the marble counter, concealing the work area from guests but still making it visually gratifying for guests on the other side.
Above: In the same kitchen, folding doors open onto the deck for a full indoor/outdoor experience.
RM: Other key elements?
JB: An exterior space is a big bonus; it's nice if you can add a deck and create a place to eat outside or have a barbecue.
RM: Kitchen hoods?
JB: If a hood is in the field of vision, it has to be taken seriously, otherwise it will be a visual distraction. We tend to custom design our hoods with simple lines.
RM: Microwave wrangling?
JB: They are unsightly and need to be considered early in the planning decision. They can be accommodated in a pull-out shelf or behind an island. Miele makes an attractive in-wall Speed Oven that serves as a second oven and microwave.
RM: How do you help clients choose materials?
JB: We gather all the samples early on and look at them together as a set, creating a materials mood board. We revisit it several times over the course of the design (if the materials don't look good as a set, they won't look good in a larger context).
RM: Storage solutions?
JB: People like tall pull-out storage drawers as they store a lot. There is no perfect solution for corners, but on one project we put a trash barrel in a corner with access from outside the building for removal. I like a stainless pan under the sink so when it drips (it will at some point), the water is contained.
RM: The best piece of advice for someone designing a kitchen?
JB: Come up with a budget. There are a lot of line items, and if money is tight, then splurge on what is most important. You need cabinets and a fridge, but if you cook a lot, go for the Wolf Range or go for the best you can afford.
Above: A sink with a view in this Berkeley residence; the counterops are limestone and the backsplash is Heath tile.
RM: Desirable design elements in a kitchen?
JB: Light! There is a real benefit to a sink with a view. It's really pleasant when that can happen. If not, then face the sink to the people that might convene with you.
RM: Your ideal kitchen?
JB: Kitchens are fundamentally about cooking, so I suppose my ideal would be a place where the process of making is enjoyable: a view and natural light; plenty of countertop space to work on, nice things to cook and work with, a few friends always on call, laughter, music—and a big sink. For it all to really work, the kitchen would need to be part of an ensemble of spaces that would include an equally wonderful dining area.

There’s a reason the kitchen is called the heart of the home: It’s where you and your family gather to cook, to eat, to socialize, and, sometimes, just to catch up over a quick snack or a cup of coffee. In many homes, the kitchen has evolved into an all-purpose room, including a dining table, computer desk, entertainment area, even a fireplace.
Today’s kitchens are practical, welcoming, and fun. They feature sophisticated colors and innovative components. They also look more like the rest of the house, complete with furniture-like cabinets, wood flooring, and artwork. The perfect recipe for a beautiful kitchen calls for giving a lot of thought to both the components and the activities that take place in the room, from cooking and cleanup to snacking and socializing. Above all, the perfect kitchen is both comfortable and a pleasure to work in. Here are ten simple elements to consider for your well-planned kitchen.

Style
The design of your kitchen may be classic or contemporary, casual or formal, high-tech or homey—whatever reflects your style preference. Because the cabinets, countertops, and appliances comprise the major components in a kitchen space, you’ll want to decide what your overall style will be before choosing them. If you’re worried about combining looks with practicality, many designs strive to blend traditional looks with modern conveniences. A generously proportioned kitchen with classic materials and up-to-date amenities proves to be both stylish and practical.

Perhaps Workstead’s most liberating move was to flip the position of the refrigerator from the galley wall to an adjacent space outside the kitchen proper. In one fell swoop, this strategy dramatically expanded cabinet space and added a working countertop
Layout
Kitchen layout studies in the 1950s introduced the term work triangle, whose three legs connect the refrigerator, sink, and range or cooktop. An efficient work triangle reduces the steps a cook must take during meal preparation and, whenever possible, is notinterrupted by traffic flow. Today, the work triangle is being challenged by other options; nevertheless, it is still a valuable starting pointfor good kitchen design. If your space is small, you might want to consider a one wall kitchen or a galley kitchen. Gaining in popularity are minimalist kitchens, in which obvious kitchen elements such as the refrigerator and upper cabinets are downplayed or tucked out of sight and the kitchen area has the same sensibility as the living space it has merged with. Deluxe kitchens are expansive spaces that often have two or more work zones.
Modern kitchen renovation with dark concrete counter and blue cabinets
Cabinets
Your first decision is whether to keep your existing cabinets, perhaps refinishing or refacing them, or to replace them. If you replace them, you will need to decide if you want “fitted” or “unfitted”cabinets. A fitted kitchen, the almost universal choice since the mid-20th century, consists of banks of matching upper and lower cabinets with appliances incorporated into them. “Unfitted” kitchens generally have a mix of styles and colors. The cabinets are more furniture-like. Upper cabinets may float singly on the wall or may sit on the countertop like a hutch; shelves may take the place of cabinets. Other decisions include cabinet construction and style and whether you want stock, semi-custom, or custom cabinetry. You’ll also want to decide on the materials and finishes. You can always mix things up, choosing different materials and complementary ones, to bring personal style to your kitchen.

They’ve chosen bedding in their favorite color and adorned the shelves with stuffed animals, trophies and pictures of their BFFs. If there’s one thing kids value most about having a space to call their own, it’s the ability to express their unique personality. They might be fine with notes from friends and collages of their favorite pop stars tacked to the wall, but you might want a more polished look—at least for a feature wall. Why not compromise by choosing canvas wall art or decals that showcase their one-of-a-kind character? Whether they’re the ultimate girly girl or a sports nut, we have artwork that’s as unique as them!

The Triple Threat for the Perfect Home Theater

Dinner and a movie… the quintessential date night. As nice as it is having a night out on the town, sometimes you just want a quiet night in. With the right living room furniture, you just might favor your home theater even more than the movie house. Here are the three key pieces of furniture to help make your home the ultimate destination for dinner and a movie:
660x660

Super-Sized Sectional

Since movies keep getting longer and longer, comfort has never been more important. What better way to get cozy than with a power reclining sectional? You can position the footrest and chair back at just the right positions for maximum comfort. With the ability to kick up your feet, lean back and sink into plush cushions, that three hour film won’t seem nearly as long. For an authentic theater-style experience, consider a sectional with built-in cup holders. Now that’s handy!
660x660-2

Lift-Top Coffee Table

Gone (finally) are the days of the unsightly TV dinner tray. In its place is one of the most innovative pieces of living room furniture to date: the lift-top coffee table. As its name suggests, the table’s top lifts upward, allowing you to dine from the comfort of your sofa. The addition of casters allows you to easily pull the table in close. It’s simply ingenious!
660x660-3

Entertainment Center

It might go without saying, but every home theater needs an entertainment center. Some units offer cabinet doors with the option of speaker cloth inserts, allowing for an authentic surround sound experience while disguising unattractive speakers. The ultimate entertainment center will provide plenty of nooks and shelves for Blu-ray players, video game consoles and all of your other gadgets and gizmos.

Feast and Flick

Once you have your home theater set up, it’s time for the fun part: picking a main course and a feature film. What would you choose for a cozy night in?

Turning wallflowers into social butterflies

Entertaining is not everyone’s bag. In fact, having to play “hostess extraordinaire” while coordinating cocktails, food and clean-up can be more than a bit overwhelming. Relax, these days you don’t have to do it all. Enter the hero of our story: Your Friendly Neighborhood Supper Club.

Potluck Dinner and Block Party had a baby, and they called it Supper Club

jhkgl
A culinary tableau inspired by the Wine Night theme
Supper clubs are the perfect marriage of a relaxed neighborhood get-together with the elegance of a sit-down dinner. The perk is that the guests bring all the food. Supper clubs set a fun “food” theme for every party; French Twist, Herb Superb, Summer’s Bounty. Sometimes the theme carries over to the attire. “Dressing up is half the fun,” says Patrice Heisner (pictured below in the light blue “toga”) who, with the help of several long-term members, has been leading her own supper club since the year 2000. “We’ve done ‘50s and ‘60s, semi-formal and even Ancient Roman parties. Not everyone dresses up, they don’t have to. Our goal is for everyone to be comfortable and have a good time.”

Getting started

Patrice and her husband along with five other couples started the City View Dinner Clubin their historic neighborhood in Monroe, NC sixteen years ago. Today it has grown to over 25 couples. It’s a great way to grow lasting friendships with the people in your neighborhood. Plus, who doesn’t love getting a chance to look inside the homes around us! Your neighbors may be just waiting for someone to get the ball rolling. Send a message to see if there’s interest. Patrice shared the vast knowledge gleaned from her own club to help you start one of your own—and keep it going.

There’s always room for more!

hfkg
Socializing with neighbors is the best part of the party
Supper clubs are the chameleons of the entertaining world. They can be customized to suit a wide array of ages; some young, some older, a few singles and empty-nesters. Once you decide to start a club, the next step is to decide how many members to invite. There is no perfect number, and getting to know your neighbors in a social setting is well worth the effort it takes to entertain more people. If you have a group larger than 10-12, you may find it difficult to seat everyone. In that case, break off into smaller groups after the cocktail hour to keep the dinner arrangements manageable.

Five is the magic number

sdgsg
Iron Chef Party-goers ask, “Who says you can’t play with your food?”
An important aspect to setting up your event schedule is keeping track of potential conflicts. Patrice has learned from experience that the months to avoid are May, July, October, November and December. Keep an eye on school breaks, holidays and local events and schedule around those dates. Patrice advises not to plan more than five parties a year to keep everyone excited and motivated. Because most of all, this is supposed to be fun!

Keep it simple, sweetheart

sdfgsg
When in Rome…setting the stage for Roman Night at the Supper Club
If you are doing a traditional supper club, the division of tasks is pretty straitforward: cocktails, appetizers, soup, salad, main course and dessert. You can move from house to house, or keep it simple by having everyone bring their part of the meal to one designated house. Some groups do cocktails at one house and everything else at a second house. Others save the cocktails for the after-party. No matter how you plan it, keep the group informed of the plans. Communicating early and often is the key to success.

Something for everyone

Menu planning is up to the discretion of the individuals providing the dish. Your job as group leader is to offer party themes that everyone can choose from. Menu and theme ideas are readily available on the internet. You can also search Pinterest for party ideas, recipes and decorating tips. Many online cooking magazines have forums to help build supper club communities either by region or interest. And be sure to include themes that range from simple to complex to give everyone a chance to participate. The opportunities for creative party ideas are endless.
Many thanks to Patrice Heisner and the fabulous members of the City View Dinner Club for sharing their themes and images from past parties.
Feel free to post images of your supper club on our Facebook page to inspire others. Or share your recipe for success in the comment section. And above all else, Keep Calm and Supper Club On!
