THE GREAT DEBATE: COFFEE TABLE VS. OTTOMAN

The Living Room Coffee Table

There was a time when the only option in front of a chair group or sofa was a coffee table. They were key designer pieces that not only served a purpose, but also evolved into works of art in their own right. Today’s coffee tables come in a variety of styles and functionalities ranging from traditional to modern and everything in between. There are lift-top, glass-top and slab-top tables that bring different sensibilities to your design. The list is constantly growing as manufacturers respond to evolving consumer needs.

The Living Room Ottoman

The evolution of the ottoman as a table emerged from the human desire to eat, relax and socialize simultaneously. Primitive man, not wanting to miss out on any of the cave-gossip while munching on his pterodactyl wings, rolled a comfy bolder up to the fire pit, propped his tootsies on a nearby rock and sat back to enjoy the evening. Not the most auspicious beginning, to be sure, but one that evolved into our current-day sofa and ottoman pairing. The ottoman’s multiple personalities and versatility make it the obvious choice when relaxation is the primary focus of the room. Ottomans have morphed into a variety of styles with enhanced functionality: storage ottomans allow throws, magazines and the endless remote collection to remain close at hand, flip-top ottomans quickly transform from a footrest to a serving tray and oversized ottomans that stand-in as additional seating. Plus the addition of casters on an ottoman makes rearranging your room a breeze.

The Supporting Pieces

Poufs, the ottoman’s mini-me, are just as cute as their name implies. Once found only in children’s playrooms, these adorable characters are turning up in fun patterns and materials, individually and in groups, in casual or elegant settings. The upholstered bench (or ottoman on legs) also makes an ideal accent table, especially when paired with substantial sofas or sectionals. These benches bring a lighter, airier look to the space without sacrificing surface or seating areas.

Can’t Decide? Use Them Together

In the right setting, it is entirely possible to use these accent pieces together. There are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to living space design. Poufs are showing up tucked under glass-top coffee tables or benches. Smaller, one-seat benches are paired in front of a sofa with trays for serving or as additional seating next to coffee tables when larger furniture might block the view into the room. The list is endless. There are so many fun ways to arrange tables, ottomans, poufs and benches these days, you really can’t go wrong. Use whatever tickles your fancy and fits in with your lifestyle to create your perfect room. Check  Ashley Furniture Clearance Sales 70% OFF now to make your living room interesting!

6 REASONS WHY YOU NEED A MEMORY FOAM MATTRESS NOW

Does your body ache every morning? Are you restless and sleepless? A memory foam mattress can help remedy these problems and make the day feel better. Lucky for you, the memory foam invented by NASA 50 years ago to protect astronauts is now used in mattresses. When you lie on a memory foam mattress, its soft foam adjusts to every part of your body from head to foot. The temperature-sensitive material distributes body weight evenly and reduces pain. If you suffer with back, neck, hip and joint pain, mattress brands like Ashley-Sleep®, Tempur-Pedic® and other premium brands are perfect for you. They adapt to your body so you can rest easy in personalized comfort. Add an adjustable base and with the touch of a button, you’ll discover that perfect ergonomic position. In addition to pain relief, there are five more great health benefits of memory foam mattresses.
Better Sleep

HELPS EASE SLEEP APNEA

When a memory foam mattress and pillow are used together, your head will be properly elevated. This helps clear the path to easier breathing because your airways are no longer obstructed.

HELPS ALLERGY SUFFERERS

There’s nothing to sneeze at with memory foam. Since these mattresses are made of polyurethane foam, the interior of your mattress will always be free of allergy-causing dust mites. By eliminating one of the major allergens, these mattresses can also help control asthma.

IMPROVES METABOLISM

If your partner constantly tosses and turns, you’ll never know it with a memory foam mattress. The foam isolates all motion and you’ll enjoy uninterrupted sleep. This will positively impact your metabolism, which may in turn help you lose weight, deal with daily stress and improve your overall health.

IMPROVES MENTAL HEALTH

Because you’ll be sleeping on a mattress that strikes the perfect balance between layers of support and a cloudlike top surface, it’ll be easier to fall asleep and the quality of sleep will greatly be improved. With solid sleep, you’ll feel rejuvenated, chronic fatigue will be eased and you’ll be in a better mood.

PROVIDES PROPER SPINAL ALIGNMENT

Contouring support provided by memory foam mattresses keeps the back aligned and delivers pressure-relieving comfort while you sleep. This helps with preventing back pain and future spinal problems. As time goes on, these mattresses are less likely to sag and lose shape, so your back will not suffer

Most people don’t think too much about their choice of pillow unless they sleep badly or suffer from pain (usually neck or back pain), but the right pillow can make a big impact on your quality of sleep, your health and your well being.

Choosing the right pillow is the first step. There’s no single pillow that’s great for everyone. We are all different shapes and sizes and have different sleeping styles and so need to choose a pillow which is suited to each of us. Trouble is, there’s loads of different pillow types, where do you begin?
Don’t worry, here’s a handy pillow reference guide to help you to narrow down the options, you’ll be sleeping better in no time:

STEP 1. WHAT IS YOUR SLEEPING STYLE?
Probably the most important factor in choosing the right pillow. This determines the required pillow support level (thickness) to adequately support your head and align your neck with your spine.

Do you mostly:
Sleep on your front (you are a tummy sleeper) – Choose a softer pillow (down pillow or a soft, low-fill synthetic pillow)
Sleep on your back (you are a back sleeper) – Choose a medium thickness pillow (high-fill down pillow, orthopaedic memory foam pillow or medium synthetic pillow)
Sleep on your side (you are aside sleeper) – Choose a medium-high thickness pillow (high-fill down pillow, memory foam pillow or medium-high density synthetic pillow)
A mixture of all or some of these (you are a mixed sleeper) – Choose a medium thickness pillow (high-fill down pillow or medium synthetic pillow)
If you are a side sleeper, you should try putting a soft, low-density pillow between your knees (especially for women). You might find this unusual, but it helps to align your upper hip properly, taking the pressure off and making you very comfortable.

STEP 2. DO YOU SUFFER FROM ALLERGIES?
Most quality down or feather pillows have usually had their fillings processed in order to remove allergy-causing particles (dander), they would also normally feature a highly-containing case to keep everything in. I’m actually allergic to feathers but I don’t have any problems with most good quality down pillows. If you suffer badly from allergies or if you’re not sure then stick with hypo-allergenic synthetic pillow fillings.

Do you:
Generally not suffer from allergies and are not allergic to feathers – Choosing any pillow filling would be fine
Have a known allergy to feathers, suffer from asthma or have other significant allergies – Stick with synthetic fillings such as polyester (Hollowfibre, Microfibre) or memory foam pillows

STEP 3. HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT TO SPEND?
We’ve reviewed pillows from £2.50 to £150 each and like most things, you get what you pay for. I love a bargain but will always avoid very cheap pillows because they never last, they loose their support and shape and will reduce your sleep quality. Likewise, at the top end, very expensive pillows are not a lot better than some other pillows at half the price.

Which are you:
I want to keep costs down (£20 or less) – Go for a well made synthetic pillow from a good brand
I’m happy to spend a little more if it means a better quality pillow (£20 to £50) – Choose a top-end synthetic pillow, luxurious down pillow or memory foam
I want the best pillow I can get (£50+) – Choose the best quality and most luxurious down pillow

STEP 4. DO YOU SUFFER FROM SLEEP PROBLEMS?
Lastly, there’s a wide choice of pillows designed to help people overcome particular sleep problems:

Do any of these affect your quality of sleep:
Snoring – Consider using an anti-snoring pillow. It can work for some.
Sleep apnea – There are pillows designed to help relieve sleep apnea symptoms
Neck pain – There’s a wide range of orthopaedic pillows designed to offer special neck support for neck pain and cervical spondylosis sufferers
Back pain – Look for a pillow which is specifically designed to help with spine alignment
Pregnancy – Choose a pillow designed with special support designed for 2nd and 3rd trimester pregnant women

Ashley Furniture Clearance Sales 70% OFF: TIPS FOR WORKING FROM HOME

You've got a home-based business. Or you work remotely for an employer. Either way, you plan to make working from home work. From choosing the right desk and storage setup, to avoiding common telecommuting pitfalls, here are some helpful ideas—including productivity tips from experts.
>>> Ashley Furniture now offers Up to 25% OFF Bed, Bed Mattress! Up to 20% OFF Dining!!! Valid only at Ashley Furniture Clearance Sales Blog! Check Ashley Furniture Clearance Sales 70% OFF
Succeed with the right workstation.
Are you bogged down with paper…or are you a minimalist, perfectly comfortable with e-files and Cloud based backups? Is it mostly computer work, or are you up to your neck with bulky books and piles of files? Before you buy…consider your needs carefully.
Home Office Desks
For the Computer Savvy: Choose a desk designed for computer use. Look for built-in cutouts to organize electrical cords. Prefer a separate keyword for your laptop? Drop-front drawers are designed just for that. If you reference materials, a desk with a prop-up feature for books or tablets is so handy.
Birnalla Home Office Desk
For the Paper Pusher: You need serious desk surface space. To keep the paper from getting totally out of hand, having overhead storage, undermount filing drawers and maybe separate storage cabinets/bookcases is essential.
Lobink Home Office Desk
For the Neatnik: You’re just one of those organized people. A modest-sized desk that’s clean lined and simple—such as the classic Parsons desk—might fit the bill perfectly.
Minibreeze Home Office Desk
For the Multitasker: You do it all…paper juggling, computer work, printing, scanning, faxing and maybe even meeting clients. A large L-shaped desk offers a separate meeting place for face-to-face time. With their pullout trays for printers, built-in power strips and ample storage…the latest credenzas are custom made for multitaskers.

Set yourself up for productivity.
Working from home is a relief from stressful commutes, gouging gas prices and office antics. That doesn’t mean there aren’t potential downsides. Surrounded by the comforts—and distractions—of home, some telecommuters have productivity problems.

Five work-from-home tips from productivity experts:

Make—and stick to—a daily-do list. The boss isn’t going to be dropping in to ask, “How’s that project going?” It’s up to you to manage your time. By having a daily to-do list and sticking to it, you won’t be caught off guard.
ThinkstockPhotos-482807223
Please, get dressed. Sure, no one will know the better if you’re on a conference call in your PJs or raggedy sweatpants, but you’re still at work. Freshly showered and dressed, you’ll feel like the professional you are.
close-up of a man's hands buttoning a shirt
Reduce distractions. Whatever you do, don’t have a TV in your home office. It’s a surefire distraction. Got kids? They might not get that Mommy or Daddy is working behind that closed door. One work-from-home expert offers a red light-green light-yellow light system that calls for colored paper markers on your door to send a clear message.
ThinkstockPhotos-78630735-1
Don’t lose touch. Conference calls and video chats are fine, but there’s no substitute for real interaction. Be it once a week or once a month, be in the office to collaborate or simply catch up with coworkers.
ThinkstockPhotos-170083559
Step back for focus. You’ve been staring at that computer screen with little to show for it. Maybe you need to step away to get the creative juices flowing. A walk around the block, a breath of fresh air can get your train of thought back on track.
If you’ve discovered work-from-home tips that work, let us know!

How to Create a Stunning Focal Point in Any Room

Whether you’d like to accentuate a unique architectural feature in your home, or draw the eye to a prized piece of artwork, the result can be striking. But where to begin?

Some things to keep in mind when it comes to accent walls:

Find inspiration. If you’re having trouble deciding on a color for your accent wall, find something in the room for inspiration. A color from a pillow, throw rug, vase or your favorite artwork can be a good starting point. Once you’ve chosen the color, decide if it “plays well” with the main wall color in the room. Refer some models at Ashley Furniture Clearance Home-store

Know where and how to use it. The accent wall is usually the first wall you see when entering a room. For example, a wall with a fireplace is typically a great spot to accentuate.

Dare to be bold. If you love bold, colorful shades, but fear they’re too overpowering for a living room, a vibrant accent wall in a family room, dining room or kitchen can be the perfect place. Kids’ rooms accommodate accent walls, since popular children’s colors like pinks, purples, dark blues and reds can be overwhelming on every wall. If bold isn’t your thing, try using a deeper version of your existing paint for your accent wall. Sometimes, that’s just enough to mix things up and add interest.
It ain’t just about paint. Accenting a wall with wallpaper is another way to add drama to your space. It works best on a solid, window-free wall. Tile accent walls in the kitchen or bath allow you to customize designs and patterns, creating a real sense of personalization.

The good thing about an accent wall is… if you don’t like it, you can start again. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Check  Ashley Furniture Clearance Sales 70% OFF now to make your wall interesting!

Ashley Furniture Clearance Sales 70% OFF: Things You Should Know before Buying a New Bed

>>> Ashley Furniture now offers Up to 25% OFF Bed, Bed Mattress! Up to 20% OFF Dining!!! Valid only at Ashley Furniture Clearance Sales Blog! Check Ashley Furniture Clearance Sales 70% OFF now
Did you know that most of us spend one-third of our lives in bed, everyday we go for sleep for 8 hours. We do spend a lot of time in bed and the bed we spend it in as a lot to do with how comfortable we are during the night and day. You should also care about your bed because a good night’s sleep is essential for a good day head.In conclusion a bed is a long term investment, because usually you will have it for about 10 years.
Have you been having difficulty sleeping lately? Do you toss and turn, wake up in the middle of the night, or have an ache in your back? The problem might be less bout your body and more about what your body is lying on. Abnormalities in your sleep routine could be signs that you need to buy a new mattress and box spring. But what’s the best way to shop for a new bed set? In this article we have some suggestions about buying a bed that will be just right for your body.

Most Important Thing : Comfort

The most important thing that you should look for, while buying a bed, is the comfort. Unless and until the bed is comfortable, you won’t enjoy sleeping on it. Therefore, you should always sit for a while on the bed and check if you can feel the comfort or not. Here are some questions you should ask yourself when you are thinking at comfort :
  • How does it feel? As I’ve already said – “A bed is a long term investment, and you’ll have it for about 10 years” …think careful at this line, you must feel really good.
  • Is it soft enough to be comfortable yet firm enough to give support?
  • Does it seem to conform to the shape of your body?
If you cannot find a comfortable position no matter how you lie, you probably have the wrong mattress. I’m not saying that the right bed or mattress will cure your insomnia or sleep, but a bed or mattress that’s uncomfortable or unsuited to your needs will add to sleep problems.

Choose a Good Mattress

The mattress is the heart of your bed and the part of the purchase you should spend most time and money on. The secret of having a good night’s sleep is the mattress and bed base you choose. Always remember that a ‘bed’ is a mattress and a base working together, you should not consider them in isolation and should ideally always try them together.
If you go on vacation and sleep better on the hotel bed than on your bed at home….you may need a new mattress. Pay attention to how your body feels in the morning. Aches and stiffness could be a sign that your mattress needs to be chucked. There are all kinds of mattresses these days, innersprings, foam, airbeds, futons, waterbeds – just to name a few. But when choosing a mattress, it all depends on you and what you like.
For instance, if you sleep on your tummy, you would probably prefer a softer mattress. If you sleep on your back, you may want something more firm. The only way to find out is to try out the mattress. Go to the store, lay on the mattress for a few minutes in the position you usually sleep. If it’s not comfortable, move on the next bed.
Don’t be afraid to test out the mattress in the store! And if you share a bed with someone, be sure to shop together. Test mattress support by lying beside your sleeping partner you shouldn’t roll toward each other and one person shouldn’t feel motion as the other leaves the bed. If a bed is too soft, you will sink into it,putting unnecessary strain on your muscles, or roll towards the middle. If it is too hard, it will not mould to the contours of your body.
There are many types, each giving different levels of comfort and support. You just have to choose what you like. Check Ashley Furniture Clearance Sales 70% OFF for more information

Ashley Furniture Clearance Sales 70% OFF: Sofa Sleeper

>>> Ashley Furniture Clearance Sales 70% OFF: Go through this link and save Up to 20% OFF Sofa Sleeper at Ashley Furniture! Save up to 70% OFF Sale Items.

Anyone who has spent a restless night on a friend’s fold-out couch will appreciate the importance of a good sleep sofa. Yes, there are comfortable models on the market — you just need to know what to look for when you shop. Here’s a rundown of some of the most important things to consider.

PB Basic Sleeper Sofa, Polyester Wrap Cushions, Washed Linen/Cotton White - $1,039
Do you need a sleep sofa? If you’ve never needed a sleep sofa before but are thinking about buying one “just in case,” you might want to think again. A sofa bed is more expensive than a conventional sofa, so unless you’re going to use it for sleeping, you’re better off buying a conventional sofa and stashing an air mattress in the closet. Due to their construction, sleep sofas have firmer seats than conventional sofas. While seniors often like the extra support (it’s easier to get up), others may find sleepers less comfortable.

Travel the West Indies from the comfort of home with the Ballari sofa. The neutral-hued chenille upholstery lends a light and airy feel while stylish rolled arms add flair. Throw pillows have an eye-catching botanical print and bold stripes sure to liven up any space. The sofa transforms into a queen-size bed, providing the perfect retreat for overnight guests.

Will it fit through the door? Measure the height of the room’s ceiling and the width of the doorway (and any preceding doorways, stairs or elevators). Bring those figures to the store, so you’ll know whether you can get the piece into the room. Legs can usually be unscrewed.

Most bed frames are the same. Most sleep sofa mechanisms are made the same way (and by the same manufacturer), so there’s little difference from one brand to another: You’ll find a metal frame with coils around the edges holding canvas decking. (Although sofa beds still have that bar underneath the mattress, it now curves away from the body, preventing painful surprises in the morning.)

How To Choose a Sofa with Ashley Furniture Clearance Sales 70% OFF

>>> Follow Ashley Furniture Clearance Sales 70% OFF and get Sofa at Ashley Furniture. Ashley Furniture Clearance Sale now offers Up to 70% OFF for many Sale items.

Everything you need to know about sofas in one place. Experts such as Windsor Smith, Barbara Barry, and Steven Gambrel share how deep a sofa should be, which style goes with which, how to select pattern, and more
When it comes to furniture, a sofa is likely to be one of the biggest investments you'll make. Yet, with so many options, it's so easy to go wrong. We spoke with our favorite designers to find out the secrets to making a confident decision.

1. Sofas are more "one-size-fits-all" than you think.
"The perfect sofa is 40" deep, 60" long, and 36" high with a 19" seat height," says Mary McDonald. From there, consider the arms. "For a traditional sofa, I like a scroll arm, and for modern one, I love a square arm, both with the same overall measurements."

2. But there are circumstances in which you might want more length.
"Most of my clients ask for sofas to be 'long enough for a nap' — so I make them at least 90" long or even longer if the room allows," says Ginger Barber. Even if you're not going the custom route, make sure you can lie down comfortably.

3. Measure twice, buy once.
Though it's tempting to rush the purchase, taking the time to check how the sofa will fit into your room is worth it. "Cut a template from brown paper in the size of the sofa you're considering, place it on the floor, and see how it looks before you buy," recommends Chandos Dodson Epley.

4. And you have to measure doorways, hallways and ceilings, too.
"Apartment dwellers, beware: Your sofa should never be longer than the ceiling height of your elevator," says T.Keller Donovan.

5. Proportion counts, especially with a sectional.
An L-shape sofa can often overwhelm a room. "On a sectional, always do a tight back instead of loose cushions. It will help keep the overall profile from becoming overwhelming," says Madeline Stuart. "And keep the back fairly low — around 32". This will make the sectional feel a little less imposing."

6. The other elements in the room can offer color cues.
You don't always have to go neutral for a stylish look. "To establish calm, I upholster sofas in a solid that's the same color as the walls and curtains," says Barbara Barry.

7. The seat cushions determine how guests will use the sofa.
"I never use two seat cushions, because then three people won't sit on the sofa," Rose Tarlow says. "I'll use three seat cushions if a sofa is 7' long or longer, and if it's 6' or less, I use just one cushion."

8. If you're buying online, you'll have to call customer support for all the measurements.
Product descriptions often miss key details, so check with the retailer to get the full scoop. "If you're buying a sofa online, a good formula to ensure comfort is a combined seat height and depth of 40" to 44"," says James Howard. "If the sofa is 16" high at the seat and 24" deep, add them together and you get 40". Or combine a 20" seat height with a 24" depth for a total of 44". If you're short-legged go with 40"; long-legged, 44"."

9. You need to conside ceiling height.
"If you have 8' ceilings, you'll want a low sofa, which gives the impression that the ceiling is taller than it is," says David Easton. "In a room with a high ceiling, you want a high-back sofa to be a weighty presence that can hold up to the room."

10. Don't fall for the trends.
Since a sofa is one of the key pieces of a room, it makes sense to keep the look as classic as possible. "I never use big patterns or trendy colors for large upholstered pieces," says Tom Stringer. Yet, that doesn't mean you can't have fun. "The punch of pattern or hot splash of trendy color should come from the throw pillows so they can be easily substituted when you need change."

11. Try this trick test how sound the structure is.
"My dad taught me that to ensure the sofa you are buying is sturdy and well-built (he's an engineer), you lift up one of the front legs 5" to 7" — the other front leg should lift as well. If it's still touching the floor, the frame is weak," says Katarina Rodman.

12. Practicality is often the best choice.
When given the option for a skirt, opt for a practical color. "Always use dark fabric for skirts so heel scuffs are not visible," says Jill Sharp Brinson.

Is Thread Count That Important?
Yes and no. Thread count is often used as the barometer of a sheet’s smoothness and durability. However, this measurement—which should refer to the number of threads woven into a square inch of fabric—isn’t always reliable. High thread count is a factor, but the type of cotton can be more significant.

What’s The Best-Quality Cotton?

Top-of-the-line is 100 percent Egyptian cotton. Second best is 100 percent pima cotton, also known by the trademarked name Supima. If a label says simply, “100 percent cotton,” assume that it’s American upland cotton, a rougher, less expensive variety. Egyptian cotton’s long fibers produce sheets that are thin and sumptuous yet extremely strong and long-lasting. (The shorter fibers of upland cotton, by contrast, can poke out of the weave, leading to a coarser, weaker fabric.) Pima cotton is also soft and less likely to pill than upland cotton. You can find a good queen set made of pima for less than $200. If you want the best, you’ll invest about $500 in an Egyptian-cotton set in percale or sateen—both clean, classic weaves. (See this round-up of luxury sheets for our favorite picks.)
What’s Better, Percale or Sateen?
Neither. It’s a matter of taste. Percale is a plain, matte weave that has a crisp, cool feel, so it may be sensible for people who tend to get overheated when they sleep. Sateen is slightly heavier and very soft, with a lustrous, smooth finish that’s almost satiny—hence the name. If you’re not sure which you prefer, look for fabric swatches on display for a touch test.

Is There a Cheaper Option For Kids or for a Spare Set?
A cotton-polyester blend, often marketed as “easy care,” is a smart choice, since it withstands frequent washings well. A little poly is all you need—a 90/10 blend is durable, looks crisp right out of the dryer, and is still soft and cozy. But don’t go above 30 percent synthetic: The sheets won’t feel great and could make the sleeper sweat.

Stretch out and let the cares of the day fade away from the comfort of a firm innerspring mattress. Three layers—a densified pad layered between responsive foam and flexible coils—offer just the right amount of support your body needs. Foundation available, sold separately. Let’s put it on the table straight away: I do not like torchiere-style lamps. I may even be permanently traumatized by the 1980s salmon-colored pair I encountered in a client’s living room a couple years back. Some people like them, which is great; I honestly love that there are so many styles of lighting for people to choose from in this world. After all, a lamp is a functional accessory, unlike a glimmering hunk of amethyst that sits there looking amazing while the husband asks why we need such a thing. But I digress.

Lamp style is definitely important, but so is lamp quantity. The way you light a room will completely change the space, and having multiple lighting sources allows you to control ambience, mood and how you use the room. Putting those light sources on a dimmer makes it incredibly easy to change up the brightness as often as you want. I’m fairly certain dimmers are a gift from the decorating gods.

Here's how to get your own layers of lighting right.

1. Use a mix of floor and table lighting.

Depending on the size of a space, I nearly always recommend both floor and table lighting. I love the mix of lighting in this room. Each piece is interesting in its own right and adds to the overall design. Lamps are an opportunity to add something extra to a space — whether it's shine, color, art or abstraction.

2. Get the scale right.

Overhead lighting adds a fantastic touch if it’s done right. Consider its size and purpose when going for an overhead fixture in a living space. This openwork geometric fixture looks gorgeous against the paper-white ceiling and walls. It adds a distinct focal point without being the sole lighting source. The floor lamp next to the sofa acts as a warm complement and keeps the lighting levels soft. It's more a catch-up-on-secrets space to me.

3. Use canned lights sparingly.

I don’t really consider canned lights overhead fixtures. I see them as ambient lighting that should be employed sparingly and purposefully. When using canned lights, people have a tendency to go a bit nuts. From a design perspective, canned lighting should never be your sole source of light. I've been in one too many homes that look like a landing strip or gaming arcade because they've had the entire ceiling done in canned lights. It becomes a missed design opportunity.

Check out this gorgeous room. Why can't more rooms be like this? The designer did it exactly right by using just a sprinkling of canned lights to accent a beam while employing matching tripod-style floor lamps to illuminate the space in a very stylish way.

4. Don't be afraid to mix and match colors.

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to lamps and lighting. There are suggestions, but in the end, it all comes down to what works best for your lifestyle and your own personal tastes.

Rooms feel more layered and interesting with a few mismatched items. The tall floor lamp in a different color than the bright blue bedside lamps really works here. Not only is the floor lamp tied to the overall color scheme through the colors in the pillows, but it also has a distinct purpose in lighting the seating area, making it the perfect place for settling down to read a magazine without any other lights on. The bedside lamps light both sides of the bed.

With all the lights on, the room is likely brighter but not overwhelmingly bright, and lighted in a controlled way. I love mismatching that works this well.

5. Know the right way to choose a table lamp.

I don't hold to many established design rules, but I do believe that you should not be able to see the neck of the light bulb, or the lightbulb socket, from a standing or seated position. If you do, the lamp is probably too tall. The glare of a bare bulb isn't pleasant for anyone.

I think tall table lamps give a room a bit of elegance. The beautiful cream-colored table lamp shown here is larger than you might expect for a delicate side table, but it works so well because of its classic shape and neutral color and the general eclectic chic of the room. If you see a large lamp base that you absolutely love, then I say buy it! Get a shade that will allow for the bulb to be covered, and you're good to go.
